Body Language speaks volumes

Fidgeting, looking at the floor, or keeping your arms crossed are just some of the major no-no’s when it comes to job interviews.

Research suggests that body language is just as, if not more, important as the words communicated.

According to studies, body language comprises 55% of the force of any response, whereas the verbal content only provides 7%, and the intonation, pauses and sighs given represents 38%.

So how can you ensure your body language stresses professionalism?

Realise that you’re being judged as soon as you arrive at the company. Set the right tone by being early, and then use the extra time to compose yourself.

Greet your interviewer with a firm, sincere handshake. More than a few candidates have demonstrated their nervousness by extending limp, clammy palms.

Don’t start talking immediately or dive into a chair. If you aren’t invited to sit, choose a chair across from the interviewer’s desk.

Don’t show annoyance. If your interviewer receives a phone call during the meeting, review material from your briefcase to give him/her a sense of privacy. Don’t show annoyance about the interruption or offer to leave the office.

Project sincerity and confidence When emphasizing key points, lean forward, use expressive gestures and maintain eye contact. Leaning back and looking down may be interpreted as a lack of confidence.

Remember first impressions last and awareness of your non-verbal language will prove vital in your job search.
