A Twitter post from the new Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan, last week shows that many of us feel the same when it comes to beginning a new career or starting a new position with a different company. “Panicking about my first Question Time. Especially difficult taking over from a brilliant Alex. Just ask David Moyes!”
Like Mark Durkan’s experience, accepting a new job will bring a whole range of emotions; excitement, enthusiasm but also apprehension and nervousness.
However, despite the highs and lows of the first few days, this is, in fact, the prime time to begin planning your career progression. Here is what we suggest:
- Determine potential obstacles to your success in the new job and make a plan to overcome them.
- Decide what improvements or changes in your management skills you want to make and put them into action.
- Create a plan for how you can best develop the capabilities of those who report to you.
- Develop relationships outside your company, such as with trade associations and professional groups.
- Learn all you can about your desired field of work and look for opportunities to apply your expertise.
Begin a new position with optimism, and dedication, but don’t forget to start on the right foot and invest in your future success as well.
