What makes a successful leader?

We often use the words “Leadership” and “Management” without really understanding what each is, and if there is a difference between them. There is a big difference in that Leadership is about “doing the right things” (and therefore relates to showing vision and strategic direction) whereas Management refers to “doing things right” (and therefore relates to managing activities efficiently to achieve the vision) (more…)

Prepare for success in the job market

It’s fair to say that most of us want what successful people have, and in a sense there is nothing wrong with this. The problem is that we’re just not prepared to pay the price they paid to achieve it.

One of Michelangelo’s greatest successes was his sculpture of David. He worked on it with such passion that he often slept in his clothes, resenting the time it took to take them off and put them on again.  He repeatedly examined and measured the marble to see what pose it could accommodate.  He made hundreds of sketches of possible attitudes, and detailed drawings from models.  He tested his ideas in wax on a small scale, and only when he was satisfied did he pick up his chisel and mallet.

Search and Selection of an MP. Round pegs for a square hole?

In between the Political bickering it is good to know that the Politicians at least actually haven’t missed the number one issue facing our country. At the doors, on the streets and in the media the Politicians all talk about the economy, the need to grow the private sector and the need to reduce the dependency on the public sector in Northern Ireland.

People in business are at least pleased to hear that the economy, business, job and wealth creation is the priority for our Politicians in NI.

At Gilpin we daily assess people’s experience and achievements with a view to predicting future performance and success in a given role. So it seems natural to have a look at the frontrunners’ CV’s for the 18 constituencies across Northern Ireland and look at their past experience for the jobs they are effectively applying for.

The career histories over the last (approx.) 20 years of the favourites demonstrates little or no experience of business which, according to them after all, is the number one priority matter in Northern Ireland.
